The report covers a broad range of global megatrends, such as climate change, social inequalities, technological advancements, and the shifting security paradigm, highlighting their impact on local food producers.
The study is based on 30 previously identified challenges for small plant-based food producers in three areas: food quality and safety, environmental changes, and collaboration.
Context
Context

Megatrends related to climate and environmental changes, health challenges, and resource shortages will have a significant impact on most contemporary challenges in plant-based food production. Secondly, accelerating technological changes, the shifting security paradigm, and the diversification of education and science will also play a crucial role. Climate change, growing inequalities, and increased consumption will amplify these challenges, while the evolution of health challenges and the shift in the security paradigm may significantly weaken their impact. Over the next decade, among the megatrends likely to have a lesser direct impact on the identified challenges, the rising influence of the Global East and South stands out. Individual megatrends will have similar or closely related effects on challenges across all three areas. For example, further urbanization and increasing demographic imbalances will lead to rural depopulation and a rise in food consumption in cities. Meanwhile, increased consumption and deepening inequalities may result in greater demand for food, while reducing attention to its quality and the side effects of production.
